Art Eddy and Ryan Hamilton bring on Dr. Shefali Tsabary to talk about her new book, The Awakened Family. As Dr. Shefali outlines in her new book, The Awakened Family, most of children’s anxieties and fears stem from their parent’s unresolved issues – from how they were raised as children. Only once the parent can identify and heal their own emotional baggage will their children be free to be their own individuals.
When Dr. Shefali tells parents that they are the ones that need to change or need therapy, not their children, they are at once shocked and intrigued. After all, until now, the parenting model has been set up in such a way that if the child exhibits a problem behavior, it is always the child who is sent for therapy to be “fixed” while the parent gets a coffee from Starbucks.
Many parents may protest that Dr. Shefali‘s model gives children too much power and control. This is not the case. Moving away from fear-based concerns of “who has the greater control?” she reframes the parenting relationship as one of kinship and mutual reciprocity. She urges parents to see their children as teachers, where they have as much to offer the parent in terms of emotional growth as they have to learn. When the dynamic turns from linear to circular, where both parent and child are seen as growing together, the parent is challenged to turn the spotlight on their own issues and discover all the ways they have yet to grow themselves.
The Awakened Family lays out a clear path to more effective, rewarding parenting, and gives parents the tools to tune into their own needs and challenges in order to better accommodate their children’s needs.
